George Steinbrenner Dies

Postby FSF Nefarious » Tue Jul 13, 2010 11:52 am

NEW YORK – George Steinbrenner, who rebuilt the New York Yankees into a sports empire with a mix of bluster and big bucks that polarized fans all across America, died Tuesday. He had just celebrated his 80th birthday July 4.

Steinbrenner had a heart attack, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Fla., and died at about 6:30 a.m, a person close to the owner told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed those details.

Regardless of your feelings for the Yankees, baseball and sport in general has lot a true titan. Thoughts?

He did a lot of stupid things, wasn't always a nice guy and had a huge ego. He was also extremely charitable, loyal and cared about his team and baseball. For all of his faults (and there were many), I doubt there are any real baseball fans who wouldn't want an owner who put so much into his team for the sake of winning. He was a titan, and left the Yankees in much better shape than when he first got them. He'll be missed.

Agreed. Even though people questioned him, he wanted one thing: to win.
